Yes, including how you get a safari as part of this adventure elopement. The 4-1-1 is that Kenya is a country in East Africa with a coastline on the Indian Ocean. You’ll be able to check out Savannah, the lakelands, the Great Rift Valley, and the mountain highlands. As far as the wild animals, we’re talking lions, elephants, and rhinos- oh my!

Kenya Wedding Guide: When to Elope

The time to elope is NOW! Seriously, if you’re reading this, contact me, and we will get you started on planning your adventure elopement!

If the Great Migration and peak safari viewing are most important for your African elopement, late June to October is the best time to go. If you’re into warmer weather and birdwatching, January to March is an excellent time.

Legal

Can a US citizen get married in Kenya? Yes, you CAN legally elope in Kenya without being residents. If both you and your sweet honey are foreigners to Kenya, you gotta do the following:

  • Apply under the Special License process.
  • Provide a Certificate of No Impediment from their home country.
  • Present a valid Kenyan visa and plane ticket or a valid permit or pass to reside in Kenya.
  • Sometimes, provide a letter from their embassy confirming marital status.

Now, there is ALWAYS the option to get all the paperwork done at home and celebrate in Kenya. If you are doing a name change, I recommend waiting until AFTER you’re back from your Kenya vacay so you don’t have to worry about getting a new passport in time with your new name or jumping through identity hoops.

Where to Elope, Kenya Wedding Guide

The good news is that with the Kenya wedding guide, you can decide where in Kenya you want to hold your elopement ceremony and adventure. While a safari adventure is what comes to most minds, it’s not the only option. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Beach Elopement

For all our geographically challenged couples, fear not, this is literally what I’m here for. The coast of Kenya is absolutely gorgeous. Think white beach and turquoise waters. On Diani Beach, there is literally a CAVE restaurant. Ali Barbour’s Cave Restaurant is set inside an ancient coral cove and lit by candlelight. Their A la carte menu specializes in seafood, international & traditional cuisine, and great wine.

Things to do on Diani Beach:

  • Snorkelling
  • Sandbank Picnics – stop at a sandbank in the middle of the ocean for a private picnic! Perfect for the day before adventure session!
  • Dolphin spotting
  • Lunch on Wasini Island with fresh seafood
  • Scuba diving
  • Camel rides on the shore
  • Private beach dinner
  • Sunrise or sunset beach photo session
  • Jet skiing
  • Kitesurfing
  • Visit the nearby Colobus Conservation – rescue center for monkeys

Lakes and River Elopement

What’s so special about a lake elopement in Kenya? Um. Hippos. Yes, you can go see big animals in the safari, but there’s a totally different kind of vibe in the lakes. Lake Naivasha offers a completely different safari experience. You can take boat safaris to watch hippos wallowing in the shallows and see the African Fish Eagles dive for their catch. You can also check out Crescent Island, where there are zebras, giraffes, and various antelope!

Mountain Elopement in the Kenya Wedding Guide

You know I gotta throw out a mountain elopement option on the Kenya wedding guide! Pack your backpacks! Whether you want a multi-day trek or an out-and-back for an experience with your vows. We gotchu.

Ngong Hills is a difficult 10.5-mile out-and-back trail near Ngong, Rift Valley, but you can do as much of it as you want! It’s a very popular area for birding and hiking, so you’ll see some other people while exploring, but we’ll definitely find you a secluded spot to share your vows with your sweet partner. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.

Sykes’ Monkey Trail Loop: In the capital of Kenya, explore this 2.7-mile loop trail near Nairobi, Nairobi. It’s considered an easy route with an average complete time of just over an hour, and you get WATERFALLS! It’s a pretty popular area for hiking, running, and walking, so we’ll likely encounter other people while exploring, but we can still make it your own adventure. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime.

While you’re in the area, we think you should visit the “Cradle of Humankind” – around 40% of the world’s human ancestor fossils have been uncovered in this region!

Kenya Wedding Guide: Urban Option

Okay, hear me out: even if you go share your vows and elope in a private spot, you gotta explore the city! That’s half the fun of a new place, immersing in the culture and learning about somewhere new!

Conscious Tourism – travel wiser with these 9 steps!

Nairobi is the capital and largest city of Kenya, located in the south-central part of the country. As of 2024, it has a population of 4.8 million and a metropolitan population of 5.7 million, making it the 11th most populous city in Africa. Nicknamed the “Green City under the Sun,” Nairobi is the only capital city in the world to host a national park within its boundaries.

Check out the bustling markets, and try a new food from street vendors! Must-try dishes include nyama choma (roasted meat), ugali (maize porridge), sukuma wiki (collard greens), and mandazi (sweet fried dough). This is what we call an elopement experience.

Kenya Wedding Guide: Safari Elopement

Dumroll pleeeeasseeee! Let’s get into the safari elopement. There are tons of great options for places where you’ll get your straight out of a story book Afrian Safari. Popular choices include Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, and Laikipia. Over in the Maasai Mara, Kenya Safaris offers a private guided tour for you and your spouse. It’ll bring you face-to-face with Africa’s iconic wildlife on the northern edge of the Serengeti. With off-road access and expert local trackers, you’ll witness dramatic predator-prey scenes up close. What really hooked up for the Kenya wedding guide: hot air balloon rides included.

The Amboseli National Park & Chyulu Hills Safaris made the list for an immersive experience. You can stay at OI Donyo Lodge, a luxurious safari lodge in the Chyulu Hills, with views of the savanna across to Mount Kilimanjaro! There are deluxe suites with a private plunge pool, lounge, dining area, bar, swimming pool, spa, gym, and safari boutique. There are also game drives, night drives, horse riding, guided walks, mountain biking, Amboseli National Park day trips (!!), and helicopter excursions. This is a great option for couples who want to stay in one place and get access to all their African dreams.

Kenya Wedding Guide: Budgeting Best Practices

How much does an average wedding cost in Kenya? According to The Knot, “Destination weddings in Kenya are generally more affordable compared to the US due to lower overall costs,” Janeson says. “Kenya also offers better value compared to destinations like Seychelles or Mauritius. While Zanzibar is similarly priced, Kenya stands out for its diversity of options—beaches, deserts, and national parks.” So, is $5000 enough for a wedding? Probably not to be able to do all the amazing things you want to do if you’re flying all the way there! If you want Kenya vibes but in the United States, let’s make it happen! We can get real creative over here. It just depends on what YOU want for YOUR day. Easy as that.

Flying and Photography

The best way to budget is to make a list with your partner of what you need and what you want. Like, you need a flight to get there, and this will arguably be one of your biggest expenses. Flying from Los Angeles to Kenya is a long international trip, so prices will vary depending on the airline, number of stops, and how far in advance you book. A safe number is about $1,200-$2500 per person, so $2,400-$5000 for you and your honey.

Photography can also be a portion of your budget. Our average couple invests $ 5,800 for complete coverage, and we do recommend the two-day elopement adventure for all international travel. This way, we capture the big day and all the fun you have!

Pssst – we also serve as your wedding planner so you have a streamlined adventure!

Budget Percentages in the Kenya Wedding Guide

What is the 50 20 30 rule for weddings? For a wedding, Paris House of Bridal says 50% of the budget goes toward the venue, food, and drinks — essentially the reception experience. 30% is allocated to attire, photography, entertainment, flowers, and décor — the elements that shape the overall vibe and aesthetic. 20% covers everything else, including invitations, transportation, favors, marriage license, and the honeymoon (if you’re including that in the overall budget).

Budgeting for elopements is a little more fun because you have fewer things to budget for, so more of your budget goes toward an EPIC experience and the photography. Instead of a venue, 50% will go to one-of-a-kind travel accommodations, flights, and tasting food you’ve never even heard of before.

30% will go to your gorgeous traditional wedding attire, wedding dress, tux, whatever floats your boat, photography, and activities. Picture you, in a wedding dress, petting an elephant. Um, yeah, that beats out a DJ any day IMO. BUT. You do you, babe.

This leaves 20% for a marriage license, passport renewal, and maybe some postcards to friends and family that say “wish you were here!” even though they know you don’t.
