You’re ready to plan a safari elopement, and we are here to help with our African Safari wedding guide. We’ll get into everything you need to know about what an elopement means versus a wedding, what to pack, and some places to consider honing in on in the great continent of Africa.

Packing for an African safari wedding can seem overwhelming. You want to be prepared while also packing light. Plan on small bush planes with strict luggage limits! For day-to-day adventure clothes, you’ll pack neutral, breathable, easy-to-layer pieces in tones like khaki, olive, and tan so you blend into the landscape.
Mornings on safari can be chilly, while afternoons heat up quickly, so pack lightweight long sleeves, a warm jacket, and a couple of pairs of versatile pants. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are a must for safari, but also pack your sandals for relaxing back at camp.
As for your wedding attire, you’ll likely opt for a wedding ceremony at the camp versus out on the safari. When picking out your dress, choose something lightweight. Are you catching the Africa theme here? It can be challenging to pack and move in a dress to begin with; don’t add 10 lbs of fabric to weigh you down on top of that. Tulle works great. Lace is also a good option! Choose something that won’t wrinkle. Also, pack a chafing stick; your thighs will thank you.

Beyond clothing, there are a few essential items when you elope on safari. Of course, binoculars are a must-have, helping you catch the unforgettable moments you might otherwise miss. You and your honey should both have a pair! Also, invest in a camera with a zoom lens and a portable charger to keep everything powered during long days in the bush. Trust me, you won’t just want pictures on your phone for this. Of course, I’ll be along with you snapping photos of the day as well, so you can soak it in!
On the safari truck, you’ll need to beat the heat on your safari elopement with sun protection. i.e., a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. Also in your bag should be insect repellent and a water bottle. On your elopement day, more than any other day, it’s so easy to get swept up in the moment that you forget to hydrate. Pack some snacks like trail mix or fresh fruit.

We have couples that come to us torn between a micro wedding and an elopement. Here at Honeybee Weddings, we do both! Our specialty is adventure regardless of wedding size. Whether you want to do that with just you and your honey or some of your favorite people, we’ve got you covered.
Our friends at Zola share that the size of your wedding can significantly affect your safari wedding options, so it’s important to know before planning what type of wedding you want. “Many lodges are only able to host a limited number of guests, so depending on your group size, you will want to select lodges that are close enough to each other to allow for joint gatherings,” says wedding planner Kim Zabriskie of The Wedding Collab. Keep in mind that you will have to manage getting guests to and from their respective lodges for group activities and events, which is a much different experience than an elopement.

A safari day is structured around the animals, the light, and the heat. When building your elopement, we’re going to factor in those elements with the moments that make your day special. An elopement timeline is customized to each couple based on their unique desires. A sample timeline is below.
Hour 1 (Early Morning): You’ll wake before sunrise in your tent or lodge. It’s peaceful, and the golden light is just starting to break. You get ready unhurried, and we’ll capture those intimate details: your vows resting on a wooden table, your dress hanging against the canvas walls, the stillness of the bush around you, the two of you enjoying a cup of coffee together. These wedding details are ones you will cherish.

Hour 1 – 2.5 (Sunrise): Whether your first look is with safari animals in the distance or the two of you wrapped in blankets watching the sunrise, we are starting the day with intentionality.

Hour 2.5 – 5 (Morning Game Drive): This is your “adventure block!” You’re fully immersed in the bush for 3–4 hours, stopping for wildlife sightings, photos, and maybe even a bush coffee stop. I’ll capture candid moments as you take it all in. Experiencing the beauty of the day together.
Hour 5 – 7 (Ceremony): We’re back at camp! This is the perfect window to slip into your wedding attire and exchange your vows. I’ll scout out the area ahead of time and make sure we get your vision just right. This is the moment you’ve been looking forward to, and it’ll be the one you look back on for the rest of your lives.
Hour 7 – 9 (Evening): We head back out for your evening game drive as the light fades. Be on the lookout for nocturnal animals and add another layer of clothing for the evening chill. Check out the stars and absorb the moment.
Hour 10 – 12 (Celebration): Back at camp, let’s have a candlelit dinner to celebrate! Cue the wedding champagne pop. You toast, share stories from the day, and celebrate in whatever way feels like you. Maybe we play a first dance song on a speaker, and you sway together under a starry sky. No crowds, no pressure. Just the two of you, fully present in one of the most magical places on earth.
On safari, you don’t have to create the adventure. It’s happening all around you. We’re going to be SUPER flexible on the timeline to create more space for those once-in-a-lifetime, unscripted moments that end up meaning the most.

Now that we have the vision for our Africa Safari Wedding guide, we’re going to lock in on the where. We’re going to do a safari deep dive at some of the best places: Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. Our list also includes Zimbabwe, specifically for Victoria Falls. What qualifies as a good safari elopement includes overnight accommodations, respect and appreciation for the country, and, of course, seeing amazing wildlife in their natural habitat.
Over in the Maasai Mara, Kenya Safaris offers a private guided tour for you and your spouse. It’ll bring you face-to-face with Africa’s iconic wildlife on the northern edge of the Serengeti. With off-road access and expert local trackers, you’ll witness dramatic predator-prey scenes up close. What really hooks adventure couples is the included hot air balloon rides. Seeing the animals up close and getting the entire landscape from above is jaw-dropping.

The Amboseli National Park & Chyulu Hills Safaris made the list for an immersive experience. You can stay at OI Donyo Lodge, a luxurious safari lodge in the Chyulu Hills, with views of the savanna across to Mount Kilimanjaro! There are deluxe suites with a private plunge pool, lounge, dining area, bar, swimming pool, spa, gym, and safari boutique. There are also game drives, night drives, horse riding, guided walks, mountain biking, Amboseli National Park day trips! This is a great option for couples who want to stay in one place and get access to all their African dreams.
Thomas Safari is a standout to us because they give back to Focus on Tanzanian Communities. Focus on Tanzanian Communities (FOTZC) is located near Thomson Safaris’ travel routes, allowing guests to visit its projects and see how these sustainable initiatives are enhancing the lives of Tanzanians.

Thomas Safari focuses on small groups of ten to twelve guests and never more than six guests per safari vehicle, which guarantees window seats and pop-up roof access. Animals on this trek will include the big five: lion, elephant, leopard, American buffalo, and rhino. In addition, there’ll be herds of zebra, giraffe, hippo, warthog, wildebeest, and more!

Most South African luxury safaris are found in the Southeast of the country. There are tons to see in the Kwandwe Game Reserve. Roam the reserve to find lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino (black and white!), and the abundant antelope, giraffe, wildebeest, hyena, hippo, plus predators such as cheetah. In addition to the beautiful blue crane, there are fish eagle, martial eagle, bokmakierie, Stanley’s bustards, kori, black harrier, South African shelduck, malachite sunbird, Knysna woodpecker, and many more! If you are a keen birdwatcher, you will not be disappointed.
Kwandwe contains four lodges, all luxurious and equipped with high-end facilities. Great Fish River Lodge is the highlight for a honeymooning couple, while Uplands Homestead has a homely feel for a micro wedding.

If you’re looking for an overall destination wedding, it has to be Zimbabwe Luxury Safari. You’ll be awed by the Victoria Falls, which is one of the world’s largest waterfalls, with a width of 1,708 m (5,604 ft). Along the vast Zambezi, you’ll have sightings of pods of hippos, fish-eagles, and bustling antelope herds. Check out the elephants coming to drink at a nearby waterhole and bathe in the golden sunsets.

Zimbabwe is home to iconic wildlife, several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and two exceptionally different wilderness experiences. Explore Hwange, the country’s largest national park. Or venture into the beautiful and wild Mana Pools National Park, along the Lower Zambezi River, renowned for its elephants and abundant game viewing.
If you’re ready for an African Safari Wedding, let’s get to planning! There is no shortage of safari opportunities, and accommodating ranging from tent camping to lodges. Get ready for gorgeous sunrises, starry nights, and beautiful animals in between.
