Today’s adventure: a Faroe Islands elopement where unexpected turns became Sarah and Rich’s fav memories! These two make some magic in the rugged landscapes, and it all starts with a detailed plan that flies right out the window because that’s just how the day’s supposed to unfold. We start at Kirkjubøur where the couple visits some famous Faroe Islands horses by their Airbnb. Shoutout to Browne and White, the adorable guard horses who makes an appearance, and *obviously* the coolest house in the Faroe Islands is the perfect backdrop.
When I ask Sarah & Richard what they’re looking for, they say “We want a comfortable, happy, loving experience that doesn’t necessarily feel like we’re in an exotic far away place but just down to earth, joking around and having a good time like we always do.”
If you want to feel relaxed & fully immersed in the moment & culture of a new place- trying new things and adventuring together, run away from the big wedding and adventure instead! My job as their photographer is make it so they don’t have to worry and have things! I plan it out with good communication and I give them a guided experience! I recognize you’re only doing this once, so it’s gotta be good!

The day is supposed to be straightforward—ceremony at the Kallur Lighthouse, vows, and breathtaking views. But then, *plot twist*! On the drive, Rich brings up the “Seal Woman” (Kópakonan) statue, a local legend for good luck. As their photographer/planner/adventure buddy, I have allll the Plan Bs, Cs, Ds, and Es. I’m always up for adventure, reroutes, and suddenly, the impromptu decision sets the tone for their heartfelt vows. Something I always recommend for your packing list is extra clothes and layers! Sarah packs the BEST fleece lined leggings that are skin colored so they keep her warm and cozy! For the full list on how to travel for an elopement, click here!
Sarah put it best: “I don’t think I would’ve wanted it any other way.” Cue all the feels!
Rich is all in, too. He loves the unexpectedness! Mid-ferry ride from Klaksvík, a local couple pointed out the Faroese flag and explained a Faroese wedding tradition! They put up the Faroese flag on the ferry because of their new marriage. *Seriously* Faroe Islands weddings are where you can switch up plans on the fly, all while honoring traditions in the most scenic places.
There’s something about immersing yourself in cultural moments like these that makes elopements unforgettable.
They spent the day exploring the islands’ coastal cliffs and stunning valleys, then grabbed pizza (so romantic, amiright?). First dinner as husband and wife: a classic, heartwarming pizza toast.
The day wrapped with stormy skies over Saksun, capturing dramatic star photos with the moody Faroe Islands weather. And because it wouldn’t be a true celebration without a little pop, champagne was definitely in order. Huge shoutout to Kelsey for the “let’s do the champagne pop!” suggestion!

Tórshavn City Hall conduct wedding ceremonies on Monday – Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm and on Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm.
To elope in the Faroe Islands, obtain a Notice of Marriage (similar to a marriage license in other countries) from Tórshavn. This must be done at least 4 weeks before the ceremony, so make sure to plan ahead! To get your Notice of Marriage, email torshavn@torshavn.fo . They also require that you send copies of your birth certificates and proof of divorce or widow(er) status, if applicable. These need to be in English (unless you happen to have a Faroese copy), so get them translated if needed!
Ceremonies in the Faroe Islands are officiated by a mayor or by a minister, and require two witnesses! If you’re eloping just the two of you, your photographer can serve as a witness, as can any other vendors!
