The best part about elopements is that you get to go wherever the hell you want. The worst thing about elopements? Narrowing down from the entire world to where you want to go. Our up-and-coming adventure elopement destination is the Faroe Islands in Denmark. We have been watching them grow for YEARS! One of the best parts is it’s 100% possible to legally get married there. While some people ask how to elope in Norway when considering the Faroe Islands, Faroe Islands are actually a part of Denmark. Both are considered Norden and include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. These form a group of countries that have affinities with each other and are distinct from the rest of continental Europe.

When arriving to elope in the Faroe Islands, you will land at Vágar Airport, which is actually the only airport on the Faroe Islands. Some options:

  • From Copenhagen (Denmark) – 2 hours
  • Edinburgh (Scotland) – 1 hour
  • Paris (France) – 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • Bergen (Norway) – 1 hour

Is it expensive in the Faroe Islands?

The Faroe Islands are a relatively expensive destination, you know, cause it’s a freaking ISLAND and all. The good news? You’ll make up for what you spend on food and transportation by not having a ton of other expenses.

Fast Facts as of Spring 2025

  • Round trip economy flights for two adults from LAX: $1,985
  • 5 days of accommodation at Hotel Runavik: $705
  • 5 day Compact SUV rental: $685
  • Gas (expensive on the island): $150
  • Food for two: $630
  • Hiking fees: $60
  • Full Day Photography Coverage: $9,600

TOTAL: ~ $13,815

Due to its isolation, the Faroe Islands are limited in resources. Make sure you book your accommodations and transportation EARLY!

Psst – as far as money goes, The Danish krone and the Faroese krone are both accepted currency since the Faroe Islands are a part of Denmark. Most places took credit and debit cards without any problem, but they will include a service fee. I always recommend having both physical currencies along with your card. You don’t want to be in a sticky situation.

What to Pack for a Faroe Islands Elopement

Here’s the deal, we are going to be as prepared as humanly possible. Emphasis on the human aspect. When you elope in Faroe Island there will be a LOT of spontaneity, adventure, and love. You show up ready to wed, and make sure you have packed the following.

  • Hiking pack with rain cover – if you want to hike, don’t skip this
  • Rain jacket with hood – you’ll have this with you the entire trip
  • Layers!! Get ready to mix and match with a variety of weather. Avoid cotton. Get merino wool, polyester, or nylon.
  • Hiking boots – leave the tennis shoes at home. They are not the same.
  • Water camelback. I’m a mom about this one. STAY HYDRATED FRIENDS!!! Especially when it’s rainy, I found that couples are less likely to think about drinking water, and it’s easy to forget in the jitters of the big day. You’re going to be adventuring, and you’ll be exerting energy- your water needs to be accessible!
  • Umbrellas are a must. Purchase a clear retractable one.
  • Pack the sweet and sentimental details for your big day! The perfume or cologne you’re excited to wear, the vows books (obvi), letters from friends and family. Your elopement day is a mix of making it happen while savoring the experience!

Faroe Islands elopement – windswept adventure & new culture!

How to Dress for the Faroe Islands

Hair and Makeup

The Faroe Islands have a few hair salons, but our recommendation is to DIY. If you’re not used to doing your hair and makeup or want to learn a few tricks, get a tutorial from a pro in your area! They can give you suggestions and show you the best products that work best for you. Let them know where you’re going and what elements you are expecting. You’ll want to practice this hairstyle a few times before the big day, which is basically me telling you to have a little couples date- cheers babe!

Wind and rain are to be expected. Keep hair and makeup natural and hair a little pulled off your face. I would say 60% of our couples do their own hair and makeup and they look amazing!!

Garment Bag

If your momma hasn’t already told you, you must keep your dress, suit, puffin outfit, whatever it may be, in a garment bag. You can always ask a flight attendant to put it in the first-class cabin. Firm believer over here that you never know what can happen if you don’t ASK! Make sure you check the airline you’re flying on beforehand. For example, American Airlines specifies that you need a soft-sided garment bag. The best shot at having someone go the extra mile to help you is by following the rules.

You’ll also use the garment bag throughout your elopement day for quick changes. We love a second and third outfit so the garment bag will help protect the other outfit.

For Your Feet

Friends, when I say hiking boots, I mean it. You’ll leave your sweet running shoes or trail shoes at home. When the beautiful Faroe Island rain comes, these trails will get muddy. Pack your ankle boots for good traction!! It’s an adventure elopement babbyyyyy. You’ll bring your formal shoes along and we will carry those in a backpack. When we are at your ceremony location, we will do a quick little swap and your new shoes will be in pristine condition!

Wedding Attire

When you are choosing a dress to elope in the Faroe Islands, consider one with lots of light layers (hello, gorg wind photos) and roomy enough in the legs/hips for you to keep your knees high for walking. Skirts with lots of fabric catch the wind—oooooh la la!

For our suit wearers – choose a color that won’t show the rain too quickly. That means stay away from black, olive greens, dark blues, and greys! Consider burgundies and golds. These look incredible as a pop of color if you’re into that sort of thing.

Again, we are preparing for a wet elopement here. Bring an extra layer over your dress that matches and is something you won’t mind being photographed in. Think of it as a white bridal sweater/cover-up.

Things to Do

Tórshavn – the Capital

The capital in the Faroe Islands lies in the heart of the island group. Tórshavn is named after Tór, the god of weather, strength, and growth in Norse mythology. The capital is home to just over 20,000 people. Despite the tiny population, Tórshavn has plentiful culture, nature, and good food. Tórshavn translates to Thor’s Harbour. The city center is protected by the port and by the long island Nólsoy, which is outside of the capital.

Kalsoy and the “Seal woman of Mikladalur”

Kalsoy is a rugged and narrow island in the Faroe Islands, famous for its dramatic landscapes, steep cliffs, and winding tunnels that connect its small villages. Known as “the flute” because of its elongated shape, Kalsoy offers stunning hiking trails and iconic landmarks like the Kallur Lighthouse, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding ocean and neighboring islands.

Check out this Faroe Islands elopement on Kalsoy!

The legend of the “Selkie” or “Seal Woman of Mikladalur” is one of Kalsoy’s most cherished tales. According to the myth, selkies (seal-people) could shed their skins and transform into humans. A man stole her skin, forced her to marry him, and hid her skin so she couldn’t go back to sea. That kickass woman cursed the sh*t outta that human and returned to the sea! The story is about the raw connection between humans and the sea!

Hiking

We love the Faroe Island for all the natural hikes and paths in general. As a reminder, Faroe Island is OLD country! Visit Faroe Islands points out that Before the roads came, you would travel between the villages using these paths, e.g. to trade, to visit family, to a Thing (local assembly) or a church. Village paths were also used when the coffins of the dead were carried to the nearest church. The paths are marked with ancient cairns, a heap of stones set up as a landmark showing the way so you don’t get lost. Check out their Guide to safe hiking

So much of the area is untouched beauty and we want to keep it that way! We are big proponents of Conscious Tourism – travel wiser with these 9 steps!

How to get married in Faroe Islands?

However, it’s actually the EASIEST country to get married in that we have done a guide on! If you’re looking at how to elope in Faroe Islands, Torshavn is your one-stop shop for making it legal.

According to the government in the Faroe Islands, “Foreigners, who marry at the city hall in Tórshavn, receive an international marriage certificate in Faroese and English. The ceremony is held in Faroese and translated into English.” Shout out also to the country for being our kind of people – the Faroe Islands offers legally binding marriages for same-sex couples. In fact, the first same-sex marriage ceremony in the Faroe Islands was a couple from the UK. HELL YEAH DENMARK! Also as far as wedding venues go, having the paperwork completed at Tórshavn and then having a seculed reading of letters during an epic hike sounds like a pretty badass elopement experience.
